Probably most people think they’re good enough to do copywriting, and it looks pretty easy at first glance. If you’re an online marketer, you have probably seen a lot of sales letters. It’s just trying to sell some product or service, and anyone can talk about that stuff, right? Anyone who has been around IM long enough can tell you that writing good copy is no walk in the park.

So what many IM marketers do is outsource their copywriting if they can afford it. So you may want to consider that option if you don’t have the time to learn copywriting, or you’re not a good writer. But if your budget can’t handle the outsourcing of this, then you really should at least learn some of the copywriting basics.

Without a good headline, no one will even read the rest of your page. Your headline is what causes your readers or website visitors to either continue reading or turn away. Most beginning copywriters take the “louder is better” approach to headline writing. Their headlines tend to lack originality and are written in large, bold fonts with many exclamation points. When a reader sees a good headline, his attention is captured, he is curious and his mind is open to finding out about your offer. It’s not easy to do all of this with so few words. Find headlines written by other marketers in your niche. What do you find appealing? Which headlines cause you to turn away? This can be very helpful when you construct your own headlines. You can even add humor if it’s appropriate, but be careful that you don’t use too much. There have been some successful sales letters that used humor. One thing you can use humor for is to break the ice a little and that will help people to let down their guard. You have to use humor the right way, and if you do it can really help your readers to think just a little bit more about you in a positive way. Of course, there is a fine line between good humor and bad humor. Also, you really don’t ever want to appear like you’re trying too hard.

Take your cues from the successful entrepreneurs in your niche. Read their sales pages and websites. What kind of effects does it all have on you? Is there anything at all that just really grabs you by your collar? What are your particular reactions to their sales copy? If, after reading it, you feel like buying, what made you make that decision? You can take all these lessons and use it in your own business.
